George Gumisiriza

Dr George Gumisiriza is a cultural sociologist advancing Afrocentric perspectives on death through his pioneering work on Repatriationscapes. His research examines the return of African diaspora corpses and human remains from the UK to heritage-linked locations across Africa, illuminating how grief, belonging, and care move across borders. Through the concept of Transnational Deathwork, he translates this scholarship into practical reflections for funeral directors, hospices, hospitals, schools, and organisations. 

Ugandan-born and a British national, he is committed to popularising African perspectives on death and bereavement. He delivered a keynote at the 23rd Cambridge Heritage Research Symposium in 2024 and presented his work at the Hospice UK National Conference in 2025. He has recently been invited to serve as an Editorial Board Member of the Mortality journal. 

Gumisiriza obtained a Bachelor of Education from Makerere University in 2003 and went on to serve in various capacities as a schoolteacher, including as a High School Principal in Uganda. After moving to the UK, he completed an MSc in Social and Cultural Theory (Merit) at the University of Bristol in 2018, followed by an MRes in International Development (Distinction) in 2020, and a PhD in Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath in 2025. 

He is a pioneering teacher of the Sociology of Death at Advanced Studies in England (ASE) in Bath and is affiliated with the Centre for Death and Society at the University of Bath.
